FAST MOVERS SURROUND SAN DIEGO!

by Jay Schwartz

San Diego Airspace Users Group

To quote comedian Bill Cosby, "I don't know what it was, but it was something fast!

The military has a significant presence sharing the airspace in and around San Diego, which requires that we take a little extra care in planning our flights and scanning the sky around us.

In "planning", a little extra knowledge goes a long way. Did you know that although there aren't necessarily more exercises being conducted at Camp Pendleton, they are much more intense, with more fighter aircraft than in previous years. There may be F/A-18s or AV-8s streaking in from ships offshore. So you say, "No big deal, I'll just stay low and let them fly overhead." Well, those exercise aircraft are making high speed attack profiles as low as 200 feet AGL. That's why R-2503A and the San Onofre MOAs are there. Oh ya, have you ever looked carefully at V-23 north of Oceanside? Take a good hard look at both sides of the San Diego Terminal Area Chart before your next leisurely cruise up the coastline. It can be sobering. A good tool to use is the frequency 123.2 MHz. That's "Longrifle", Camp Pendleton's Range Control, and they want to help you stay safe.

Hopefully most all of us know how to plan for a flight in the San Diego Class "B" airspace, but remember that down at MCAS Miramar, it is truly the "Hornet's Nest". So when asking for a Class "B" airspace clearance from the Rancho Santa Fe/Del Mar area to Montgomery Field at 1,500 feet, you may not get the preferred handling you wanted. Try 3,500 feet and you will probably get the short cut. Speaking of Montgomery Field, here's a few tips to remember. That inconvenient piece of Class "B" airspace over Torrey Pines is there for a very good reason. Fighters exiting Miramar enroute offshore are transiting at 2,000 feet. Also, the north pattern at Montgomery is very tight! Clairemont Mesa Boulevard, not Highway 52, is the Class "B" boundary. An abbreviated crosswind leg or 180 degree turn to downwind may be necessary to stay in the Montgomery Class "D" airspace, or you may just find yourself inadvertently flying wing on a F/A-18.

Now for the "scanning" part. Have you ever noticed how military paint their fighters so they're hard to see? Nuff said!

Please be aware of our fellow military aviators and their vital mission. Your attention and avoidance will allow them to do their job, without an unexpected general aviation intercept on them.
